The Story Behind the Design

Every summer, Puffins return to Ireland's offshore islands and coastal cliffs to breed.

They nest in burrows.

They return to the same wild places.

And they raise just one chick.

For that Puffling, the world begins underground.

Then comes the moment it leaves the burrow for the first time and discovers the Atlantic.

That journey is what this design celebrates.

The cliff.

The colony.

The parent.

The Puffling.

And the ocean that connects them all.

No Fish. No Puffins.

The Puffin's story doesn't end at the cliff edge.

It begins there.

Puffins depend on a healthy marine ecosystem and small fish such as sandeels for food. Changing ocean conditions can affect the availability of the prey they need, while pollution, climate change, disturbance and pressures at breeding colonies create additional challenges.

That's why Guardian of the Cliffs is ultimately an ocean story.

Because what happens beneath the waves determines what happens above them.

Healthy seas. Healthy cliffs. Healthy future.

Ireland's Atlantic Guardians

From the Saltee Islands and Skellig Michael to the Cliffs of Moher, Puffins are part of some of Ireland's most spectacular seabird colonies.

Places such as Puffin Island in County Kerry provide important breeding habitat for Puffins and other seabirds, with the surrounding marine environment protected as part of the reserve.

These aren't simply beautiful places.

They are homes.

And protecting them protects much more than one species.
