A Tiny Bird With Extraordinary Journey.

The Little Tern is Ireland's smallest breeding tern. Each spring, these remarkable seabirds return to our coastline after wintering in western Africa, searching for safe beaches and shingle shores where they can raise the next generation.

Their journey is extraordinary.

Their future is fragile.

This design is a tribute to the Little Tern and the incredible journey it makes between Africa and Ireland every year.

The Epic Voyage

Little Terns spend their winters along the coast of western Africa before making the journey north to Ireland in spring.

Here, they nest directly on the ground on exposed sandy and shingle beaches.

That makes their nests incredibly vulnerable.

Storms, high tides, predators, disturbance and human activity can all threaten eggs and chicks.

There are only a small number of breeding colonies in Ireland, making every successful nesting season important.

Conservation projects at places such as Kilcoole in County Wicklow, Portrane in County Dublin and Baltray in County Louth are helping give these tiny travellers a safer place to return to.

No Safe Shore. No Journey Home.

That is why we created this design.

The Little Tern's story isn't simply about migration.

It is about having somewhere safe to come home to.
